UNITE MMA 

At Unite MMA, we believe in building a strong, respectful, and supportive community. Whether you’re new to martial arts or a seasoned fighter, our gym is a space for growth, learning, and pushing yourself to new limits. Here are some important guidelines to help you get the most out of your experience.

Arrive on Time
If late show Respect

Please arrive a few minutes early to prepare for class. If you’re running late, wait for a natural break in the training, and then you’ll be welcomed onto the mats to join the class. We’d much rather have you show up late than not at all, so don’t hesitate to come, even if you're behind schedule.

Bring a Water Bottle and Towel

Staying hydrated is key to peak performance, so bring a water bottle to every session. A towel is also essential to keep yourself and the mats clean during intense training.

Please remember, no shoes on the mats at any time. The mats are a space where we train, roll, and grapple, and we need to keep them clean for everyone’s safety and hygiene. Shoes carry dirt, bacteria, and other debris from outside, which can lead to infections or injuries.

Always wear shoes off the mats and in the gym area to protect your feet from any hazards, and help us maintain a clean and healthy training environment.

No Coaching from the Sidelines

At Unite MMA, we do not encourage coaching from lower grades or fellow students during training sessions or live training. The coach or coaches running the class will provide guidance and feedback during rolls if necessary. While we value a supportive training environment, only the assigned coaches are responsible for giving instruction during class.

Exceptions are made for competition rolling, where the Professor or Coach in charge may request assistance from specific individuals.

As a reminder, our instructors are highly experienced and here to guide you—please respect their roles during training sessions. This ensures everyone can focus on their own growth and learning.

No Coaching from Parents

Parents, we understand your desire to support your child’s progress, but we kindly ask that you refrain from assisting or coaching your child during class. This can be distracting to other students and disrupt the flow of the session. Our coaches are experienced in knowing how much instruction your child needs at any point in their development. Please trust us to guide them and allow your child to focus fully and enjoy their time on the mat.

Additionally, we ask that parents do not walk onto the mats during sessions. This is both for safety reasons and to ensure the class runs smoothly without interruptions.  Rest assured, our coaches will ensure your child receives the guidance they need.

Be a great Training Partner

Respect your training partners by maintaining control, practicing safely, and matching their intensity. We will guide you through which moves are dangerous, and once you are aware, we expect you to maintain that duty of care for your fellow team members. Keep good hygiene, show up with a positive attitude, and support each other's progress.

Always communicate openly—if something feels off, speak up. Remember, everyone’s here to learn and improve together, so help foster a respectful, safe, and encouraging environment.

For BJJ classes, you’ll need to wear a Gi (also called a kimono), which is a traditional uniform used in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Here’s what to make sure of:

Gi: Ensure it’s clean and fits properly. A well-fitting Gi helps you move more comfortably and reduces the risk of injury.

Rash Guard (optional): Wearing a rash guard under your Gi is a good idea for added comfort and to prevent skin irritation.

Belt: Always wear your BJJ belt, which indicates your rank and level of experience.

Hygiene: Make sure your Gi is washed after each session, and nails are trimmed to keep the mats clean and safe.

In Grappling/ NoGi classes, we don’t wear the 

traditional Gi. Instead, you’ll need:

Rash Guard: A long or short-sleeved rash guard is essential to prevent skin infections and keep training hygienic.
 Avoid clothing with pockets, zippers, or buttons.

Mouthguard (optional): While not required, a mouthguard is recommended for added protection, especially during intense training sessions.
Hygiene: Like BJJ, keep your training gear clean, and ensure nails are trimmed before stepping on the mat.

What to Wear for BJJ and Grappling Classes

General Gym Rules

1. No shoes on the mats 

Keep the mats clean by leaving your shoes at the side of the mats.

2. No bare feet off the mat 

Wear thongs or slides when off the mats.

3. No jewellery allowed during training

 This helps prevent injuries to yourself and others.

4. Keep your gear clean

Always arrive with clean uniforms and training gear.

5. Trim your nails 

Keep your fingernails and toenails trimmed for everyone’s safety.

6. No training with skin infections

 If you have any skin issues, wait until they clear up before training.

7. Stay home if sick 

Rest and return when you’re healthy to avoid spreading illness.

8. Ask permission before entering the mat area

 If class is in session, get the coach’s approval before stepping on the mats.

9. No coaching from the sidelines

 We do not encourage coaching from the sidelines, especially if you’re thinking of coaching someone at your grade or higher—it can be awkward and annoying for them. Please let your teammates focus on learning unless coaching is specifically requested by the us.

10. No parents coaching

 Parents, please avoid coaching or correcting your children during class. Leave it to the instructors to guide them.

11. Be a great training partner

Respect your partner and support each other’s learning.

12. Respect Titles

Address all Black Belt instructors as Professor and other graded instructors as Coach. This shows respect for their experience and dedication to teaching. Respect is a key part of our training culture.

13. Bring a towel

For hygiene purposes, have a towel to wipe down after class.

14. Practice good personal hygiene

Wear deodorant, clean yourself with wet wipes if coming straight from work without a chance to shower, tie up long hair, and use breath mints (available at the desk) if needed. Please avoid smoking before class.

Most importantly, enjoy training at Unite and give your best effort!

 

What to bring to Striking Classes?

You’ll need some basic equipment, but don’t worry—you can borrow gear while you’re on the 3-Class Starter Pass. That said, you’ll want to invest in your own gear soon, because let’s face it, borrowing equipment is like borrowing someone’s joggers—not ideal!

We’re here to help with any questions you have about brands, and we can guide you toward great, long-lasting gear. It’s a good idea to invest in high-quality equipment that will last, giving you the best experience and helping you stay focused on your training.
